Kia ora! This design & mockup has been selected by the team as the approved design direction for Kete o te Mātauranga. Developed by Kory Ihaia of MindLabs, this design brings the original kaupapa, research, content requirements and early wireframe thinking together into a complete experience that will now guide the production build.
Kete o te Mātauranga is a whānau-centred digital heart health resource designed to help whānau understand, manage and strengthen their heart health through accessible information, personal tracking, resources and a culturally grounded Te Taiao experience. The approved design establishes the screen architecture, navigation, user flows and visual direction for the new Progressive Web App, with the next stage focused on bringing this experience to life as a secure, installable and accessible digital experience.

Colour and Te Taiao
The colour palette takes its direction from Te Taiao, using greens, warm earth tones, sand and sky inspired by ngahere, whenua and wai. The aim is to create a space that feels calm, grounded and familiar while supporting people through health information that can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Colour also has a clear purpose across the app. Softer tones help separate sections and content without making the experience feel clinical. Stronger colours are used carefully for important actions and safety information. Emergency red is reserved for urgent health messaging such as Call 111, giving those moments a clear and consistent visual signal.
The overall direction reflects the kaupapa of Kete o te Mātauranga, where connection to Te Taiao, cultural relevance and accessible health information are central to the experience.
Typography and readability
The design uses Young Serif for headings and Source Sans 3 for body copy and interface text.
Young Serif gives the app warmth and character, while Source Sans 3 keeps health information, instructions and navigation clear and easy to read on a phone.
Typography has also been considered specifically for te reo Māori. Māori kupu containing macrons need to render correctly across the product, so the chosen typefaces support both readability and accurate presentation of te reo. Any future typography changes will need the same level of checking.
Design approach
The experience is built around simplicity, clear navigation and manageable amounts of information at a time. Cards provide a consistent structure across the app and help separate conditions, resources, tracking, personal information and actions into clear sections.
The visual hierarchy is intentionally calm and spacious. Health information is presented in plain language, with clear pathways into more detail when a person wants it. The structure also allows for different types of content, including written information, illustrations, videos, resources and interactive tools as the Kete continues to grow.
Mockup 2 now sets the approved direction for the screen architecture, navigation, user flows, visual hierarchy and overall look and feel of the production Progressive Web App.
Te reo Māori
Te reo Māori is an important part of Kete o te Mātauranga and will continue to be developed alongside the product.
Approved kupu and navigation language are used throughout the current design where they are available. English remains in areas where te reo Māori content or clinical translations are still awaiting review and approval.
Final te reo Māori content will follow the appropriate Manawaora and reo review process before publication.
